Börstel Abbey has its origins in the Cistercian abbey Rosenthal in Menslage. The community was founded there in 1244. In 1250, the Counts of Oldenburg relocated the abbey to Börstel. In 1642, the Cistercian nuns converted the monastery into a free secular convent. With the Peace of Westphalia, the number of canonesses was settled at ten on the basis of the visitation of 1625, eight of them Protestant and two Catholic. The chapter and the convent have existed in this form to this day.
